East African Drylands Initiative

Columbia Global Centers | Africa

The East African Drylands Initiative aims to address the unique development challenges of arid nations in East Africa.  The Initiative will bring the Millennium Villages Project approach of integrated development to the benefit of pastoral and agropastoral communities in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda.  Its interventions include: early weather warning systems, common epidemiological systems for both pastoralist communities and their livestock empowered by mobile technology, decreased obstacles to regional trade and business, and a tailored primary and secondary education system.
