Inauguration of CGC | Istanbul
October 21, 2011
On October 12, 2011, Columbia University faculty, friends and students were hosted by the Turkish representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Ertugral Apakan, to celebrate the inauguration of the University’s seventh Global Center in Istanbul, Turkey. University President Lee C. Bollinger joined notable Columbia faculty and scholars of the region, including the Chair of the Faculty Steering Committee of the new center, Karen Barkey, the Consul General of Turkey, Mehmet Samsar, and Ambassador Apakan.
Columbia is already active in the region; educators and administrators alike are excited about the new opportunities offered by the Columbia Global Center | Istanbul for partnerships with government agencies and nongovernmental organizations, universities, and individuals in Turkey. Preexisting projects in the area include initiatives by the School of the Arts, the School of International and Public Affairs, the Columbia Medical School, and The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, as well as partnerships with many Turkish universities. The Columbia Global Center | Istanbul hopes to offer support to and expand on these initiatives, as well as create new ones and facilitate dialogue between the University’s other nearby centers in Amman and Mumbai.
