Religious Law, Local Practice, and Global Debates about Muslim Women's Rights Workshop

Columbia Global Centers | Middle East

Led by Lila Abu Lughod, Professor of Anthropology and Women's and Gender Studies at CU, the workshop was held at the Center in Amman in April, 2011. The workshop brought together a group of international scholars and practitioners working on law, legal reform, and legal practices in particular places in the Muslim world - including Iran, Egypt, Palestine, India, Nigeria, Indonesia, Senegal, and Morocco - with the goal of disentangling the various dimensions of the polarized debates about the “shari’a problem.” A web-publication from the workshop will be posted on the Center for the Critical Analysis of Social Difference website.
