Research Training Programs

Columbia Global Centers | Middle East

The Center helps promote skill-development of regional researchers by offering trainings and workshops. In December 2009, the Center hosted the Online Research Methods Workshop, in conjunction with Columbia University Libraries. The workshop trained participants about usage of open-access resources and free internet research tools. It also identified subsets of resources that were customized to participants’ research interests. Approximately 20 researchers from various institutes in Jordan attended the workshop.

A seminar in Quantitative Methods and Data Analysis was also offered at the Center, with instruction by faculty from Columbia’s Institute of Social and Economic Research and Policy (ISERP). The program brought 50 Iraqi scholars, identified by the Scholar Rescue Fund, to CUMERC for training workshops. Instruction focused on research and case studies relevant to higher learning in post-conflict regions and topics that affect the development of higher educational systems in Iraq.

In December, the Center will host an additional two-week training program in conjunction with ISERP: Social Science Research Methodology (SSRM). The course is available to research centers, NGOs and government agencies, and the curriculum was developed in coordination with the Center's research roundtable.
