Speaker Series

Columbia Global Centers | Middle East

In association with visits by prominent Columbia University faculty members and international academics, the Center hosts regular public lectures for members of the community to engage with scholars and provide them with the opportunity to learn about a wide range of topics, from economics, to public policy, to the arts. In addition to its regular schedule of lectures, readings, and cultural events, the Center coordinates a themed lecture series that helps further cement its reputation in Jordan and the region as a leader in promoting academic discourse on a range of issues. The CUMERC-YPO Speaker Series was launched in May 2009 and is offered in conjunction with the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO). The series seeks to spark dialogue on issues such as public policy, business, and economics, and has drawn numerous renowned figures to the Center since its creation including Lakhdar Brahimi, James Zogby, Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad, and Rashid Khalidi, to name a few.

In January 2012, the Center is planning to launch a special series of keynote lectures on economic reform, ranging from fiscal policy, to business environment, to trade and finance. The lecture series will feature prominent figures drawn from all waves of the political and economic  spectrum in Jordan; those who have made and are making contributions of notable significance to the political and economic life of the country. The goal of such an initiative is to provide narrative and scientifically based information to the public in order to shape discussions and opinion and to provide a solid basis to the deliberations at all levels.
