Columbia Global Centers | Latin America (Santiago)

This project seeks to organize a four day workshop for members of Columbia’s Department of Astronomy and of the Instituto de Astrofisica of the Pontifica Universidad Catolica.

Marcel Agüeros, Assistant Professor of Astronomy - Arts& Sciences

Strengthening and expanding research connections between the two departments is an important strategic goal for both.

The proposed workshop, who them will be time-domain astrophysics, will be hosted by the Santiago Center and attended by a dozen Columbia faculty and graduate students. It will enable discussions of scientific interests that are shared by faculty in both departments – interest that span the range from understand populations of nearby stars to exploring the behavior of the most distant supermassive black holes.

The workshop will also foster the development of new collaborative research projects attuned to the coming of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, and lay the groundwork for future exchanges, particularly of students.

Professor Agueros has tentatively identified the week of Jan. 12, 2015, for the workshop.
