On October 30, Columbia Global Centers | Beijing invites you to a book talk featuring Mr. Amir Husain, member of the board of advisors for IBM Watson, and his new book, The Sentient Machine: The Coming Age of Artificial Intelligence. This book talk is co-hosted by MIC and CITIC Press Group.
About The Sentient Machine
Amir Husain, a brilliant inventor and computer scientist, argues that we are on the cusp of writing our next, and greatest, creation myth. It is the dawn of a new form of intellectual diversity, one that we need to embrace in order to advance the state of the art in many critical fields, including security, resource management, finance, and energy.
He addresses broad existential questions surrounding the coming of AI: Why are we valuable? What can we create in this world? How are we intelligent? What constitutes progress for us? And how might we fail to progress?
Husain boils down complex computer science and AI concepts into clear, plainspoken language and draws from a wide variety of cultural and historical references to illustrate his points. Ultimately, Husain challenges many of our societal norms and upends assumptions we hold about "the good life."
Speakers
Amir Husain, recognized as Austin's Top Technology Entrepreneur of the Year, is a serial entrepreneur and inventor based in Austin, Texas. He is the founder & CEO of SparkCognition, Inc. an award-winning Machine Learning/AI driven Cognitive Analytics Company, a Member of the Board of Advisors for IBM Watson, and a Member of the Board of Advisors for The University of Texas at Austin, Dept. of Computer Science.
Professor Yuhuang Zheng graduated from Columbia University with his PhD degree in marketing. He is currently Associate Professor of Marketing and Faculty Director of the Marketing Department Doctoral Program at the School of Economics and Management (SEM) and Research Fellow at the China Business Research Center, Tsinghua University. Previously he was on the faculty at Fordham University School of Business (New York) and has marketing and strategic planning experiences at Motorola and Compaq.
