On August 5, Columbia Global Centers | Beijing invites you to a film screening of The Battle of Algiers, followed by a discussion on its relation to the Bandung Spirit. This event aims to discuss feasible ways to create and maintain peace in a globalized world by reflecting on Algeria's independence movement in the 20th century.
The film, The Battle of Algiers, took place between 1954 and 1957, in the middle of the Algerian War of Independence. The film concentrates on the rise of the National Liberation Front in the capital city, Algiers. The guerrilla fighters waged urban warfare against the French occupiers. The French responded by cracking down on the uprising and using torture to gain information on the guerrilla fighters.
