In recent decades, women have made such large gains in educational attainment that their rates of obtaining college degrees exceeds that of men in many countries. At the same time, gender segregation in college majors persists. Women remain less likely than men to major in science and engineering than men even as the size of this gender gap varies by country. This presentation summarizes recent research done by Professor DiPrete with the collaboration of Claudia Buchmann, Allison Mann and Joscha Legewie on the gender gap in STEM majors, and on the prospects for closing this gap in the foreseeable future.
