Columbia – Boğaziçi Byzantine Studies and Urban Mapping Summer Program Commences

June 21, 2013 - August 7, 2013
9:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Columbia University and Boğaziçi University’s joint summer program offered a group of students from both universities a unique opportunity to learn about the history, urban development and historic monuments of Byzantion/Constantinople/Istanbul. Though coursework and a series of day-long excursions, students explored to understand Istanbul’s modern topography as an exciting palimpsest of empires, cultures and religions. A research and fieldwork component added practical experience in architectural site documentation, Quicktime VirtualReality photography, archival work, and conservation.

The course, which was part of Columbia Global Centers | Istanbul's Istanbul Documentation Project (LINK), was co-taught by Professor Holger A. Klein, Chair of the Department of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University and Professor Koray Durak of the Department of History at Boğaziçi University.
