Conservatism and Authoritarianism in Brazil: Histories, Politics, and Cultures

February 14, 2020
9:30 AM - 3:30 PM
Columbia University | New York

Recent political developments in Brazil have brought increased scholarly attention to conservatism and authoritarianism in the country’s past and present. In this one day interdisciplinary conference, we explore the ascendance of conservative political figures and the increased visibility and influence of authoritarian actors and practices from a variety of angles and scales.  In exploring these complex phenomena, conference speakers address trends in electoral perceptions and behaviors, changing socioeconomic and cultural dynamics, shifting racial politics, the role of religion in contemporary politics, and the implications of recent political trends for democracy, citizen rights, equity, and inclusion. The conference is a collaboration between UNICAMP (the University of Campinas) and Columbia University ́s Institute of Latin American Studies (ILAS), and its Lemann Center for Brazil Studies.
