Punta Arenas, Chile

On May 22, post-grad students from the GAIA Antarctica Research Center and high school students associated with American Corner will visit the JOIDES Resolution research vessel, docked at southern Chile’s Punta Arenas port before embarking on the Dynamics of the Pacific Antarctic Circumpolar Current (DYNAPACC) project. The expedition, led by Columbia’s Gisela Winckler and Frank Lamy of the Alfred Wegner Institute, will investigate the powerful role that the Southern Ocean plays in Earth’s climate system. The Antarctic Circumpolar Current is the mightiest current of the planet, and it stores more anthropogenic carbon and heat than any other system.
