Columbia Global Centers | Mumbai is organizing an interactive workshop with Pam Factor-Litvak, professor of epidemiology and associate dean for Research Resources at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, to discuss the relationship between the surrounding environment and early childhood development in Mumbai’s informal settlements.

Aimed at promoting evidence-based research on early childhood development, the workshop will focus on the common developmental issues faced by children under the age of 5 years, and how the exposure to poor living conditions and environmental hazards in Mumbai’s informal settlements affects them.

It will conclude with strategies and recommendations for academia and civil society organizations to design and implement community-focused field studies on this topic. Dr. Factor-Litvak is a Yusuf Hamied Fellow who is developing multi-site studies across India to examine the impact of the surrounding environment on pre-school readiness, and behavioral and neurodevelopmental outcomes in children living in informal settlements.
