Enhancing Wellness with Emotional Intelligence: Session I - What is Emotional Intelligence?

November 12, 2021
8:00 AM - 9:00 AM

Emotional Intelligence (EQ) can be described as the ability to control and manage oneself and others' feelings while acting wisely and positively in human relations. Understanding this skill can help one effortlessly deal with stress, manage conflict and challenges, communicate effectively, and express empathy. It is easier for individuals with higher EQ to wholly accept themselves, as they tend to manage strong pessimistic feelings such as sadness. Numerous studies laud the significance of EQ. Particularly, the Carnegie Institute of Technology established that 85 percent of its successes was attributed to adeptness in human engineering and the ability to lead, communicate, and negotiate effectively, implying that only 15 percent of its achievements were due to technical aptitudes.

The workplace houses diverse people from different backgrounds and personalities, thus a great need for EQ. Individuals with high EQ are productive, efficient, and effective in their work and exhibit problem-solving, team spirit, decision-making, and effective communication skills. Against this backdrop, the Columbia Global Centers | Nairobi will host a series of virtual sessions on the topic. We welcome you to the first part, "What is EQ," where we hope to define and delineate the term.
