F​unding ​Independent & Quality Journalism

Columbia Global Centers | Istanbul, in partnership with the International Press Institute (IPI) Turkey National Committee, is organizing a panel on December 16, 2021, at 6:00 PM (IST) to shed light on international funding and media and its impact on independent journalism. Our distinguished panelists will share their insights on these issues and draw comparisons between how independent journalism could be enhanced with international funding for operations, especially within the context of authoritarian regimes. Please note that there will be simultaneous translation into Turkish and English during this event.


Sheila S. Coronel is director of the Stabile Center for Investigative Journalism and the Stabile Professor of Professional Practice in Investigative Journalism at Columbia University. She was academic dean of the Columbia Journalism School from 2014-2020 when she helped establish a master's program in data journalism and made the teaching of investigative techniques mandatory for all students. She worked for many years as a journalist in the Philippines and was a co-founder and director of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism. She is on the board of the Committee to Protect Journalists and the Columbia Journalism Review and is board chair of the Media Development Investment Fund. She is the author and editor of more than a dozen books. She has received numerous awards for her work, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award, Asia’s highest prize.  

Barbara Trionfi is Executive Director at International Press Institute (IPI). She joined the organisation in 2000, as a press freedom adviser for the Asia-Pacific region, where she had previously studied and worked for over four years, carrying out research in the field of human rights and freedom of expression. Later, as press freedom manager, she oversaw IPI’s global press freedom monitoring and coordinated IPI’s global advocacy. With an academic background in international relations and human rights, Barbara has taught courses at Webster University, Vienna in Media Ethics, Media Literacy and Cultural Diversity and the Media.

Kaya Heyse is News Coordinator at Medyascope. Heyse  started his professional life as a journalist in 1997 as an intern in Star TV, Istanbul, Turkey and has won numerous awards with his reporting on the Afghanistan and Iraq wars in the early 2000’s. After years of working in war zones, Kaya became the Azerbaijan Country Manager of MOB Construction Inc., a Turkish construction company. In May 2014, Kaya helped found PIAR Iletisim, a PR and media productions company. Before joining Medyascope in 2019, Kaya worked as a freelance journalist.


Onur Sazak is Turkey-based Project Coordinator at IPI. Prior to joining IPI, he coordinated the Philanthropy Infrastructure Development in Turkey project at The Third Sector Foundation of Turkey (TUSEV) from September 2019 to May 2021. He has also worked at Open Society Foundations Turkey, Istanbul Policy Center at Sabancı University, Hudson Institute, and Brookings Institution in different capacities ranging from research manager to program associate for over a decade and a half. Sazak holds a BA and MA in International Relations and International Economic Policy from American University in Washington, DC. He is also 2021/2022 Mercator-IPC Fellow at Sabancı University’s Istanbul Policy Center.
