LA DOULEUR, 2018, Emmanuel Finkiel, 126 min.
June, 1944. France is still under German occupation, although rumors from the front suggest the wat may be heading into its final phase. Robert Antelme, a writer and member of the resistance, is arrested and sent away to a camp; his wife, Marguerite, also in the resistance, searches frantically for a way to help him—or at least to learn whether or not he’s still alive. Marguerite Duras’ novel La Douleur published in 1985, details her desperate struggle to save her husband, as well as the toll this struggle exacted on their lives in the postwar era; Emmanuel Finkiel has made a brilliant adaptation of the first part of the novel, focusing on the first part and powerfully capturing a world coursed with guilt, suspicion, compromise and betrayal. As the young Duras, Melanie Thierry gives a brilliant performance.
After the screening, director Emmanuel Finkiel and producer Yaël Fogiel will be present to discuss their work.
