Word for Word is a literary workshop and program that brings graduate students at Columbia’s School of the Arts together with other writers in training from around the world (Germany, Italy, France, Brazil and Chile). In the case of Chile, they work with budding writers from Universidad Diego Portales (UDP).
Paired together for a semester, poets from Columbia University and UDP’s School of Creative Literature mutually translate each other’s work. The idea is to provide emerging writers with literary growth, a valuable career experience and a global network, and to encourage the authors to engage with their own language in a new way – literally, “word for word.”
This bilingual reading event - to be transmitted via YouTube Live - is the culmination of the literary students' work, and it will take place in the context of World Book Day, which commemorates an important date for both the English and Spanish languages: the death of Shakespeare and Cervantes.
