Sustainability has become a global buzzword in recent times, but how do nations fare in key areas such as urban waste management? Columbia Global Centers | Mumbai invites you to a Public Lecture where Dr. Athanasios Bourtsalas, Adjunct Professor at the Earth and Environmental Engineering Department, Columbia University will present research findings on the level of municipal solid waste (MSW) management achieved by different countries. The lecture will describe the Sustainable Waste Management Index (SWMI) and examine its relationship to known national indicators such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita and the Inequality-adjusted Human Development Index. A discussion assessing the performance of Indian cities will be led by Dr. Sunil Kumar, Senior Scientist, NEERI, and Secretary, WTERT-India, following the talk.

Dr. Athanasios C. Bourtsalas is an Adjunct Professor at the Earth and Environmental Engineering Department of Columbia University and the Manager of the Earth Engineering Centre-Columbia (WTERT-US).
