Malnutrition is India's silent emergency with nearly half of India's children being underweight, 20 percent severely malnourished and 75 percent anemic. These statistics are far worse for children living with cancer, yet nutrition often remains a neglected aspect in the cancer treatment of children and adolescents - despite it impacting clinical outcomes. Dr. Elena Ladas, Assistant Professor of Nutrition at the Columbia University Medical Center, will discuss the crucial role nutrition and integrative medicine play as components of supportive care during and after the treatment for childhood cancer. She will present her research on the status of nutritional care in pediatric oncology and elaborate on her mission of advancing scientific data, training of health care professionals, and establishing collaborations in India.
