Visionary Realities: A Brief History of Documentary Cinema in China

June 5, 2017
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Mumbai

For most of the twentieth century, documentary film was produced and viewed at much larger scales in China than its fictional counterpart, circulating beyond movie theaters into all arenas of social and political life. By excavating moving images from arenas conventionally considered quite separate from cinema, Columbia scholar, Dr. Ying Qian, will present a historical survey of China’s rich and evolving documentary tradition from the early 20th century to contemporary independent productions, from Russo-Japanese war newsreels to ethnographic documentaries enforcing ethnic classification in the early People’s Republic of China, and from documentaries training industrial workers in the Great Leap Forward to reels of “documentary evidence” supporting the “Gang of Four” trial.
