Women, Cities, and Climate Change

Columbia Global Centers | Istanbul, in partnership with the U.S. Consulate General in Istanbul, is organizing a lecture on Monday, April 4, 2022, at 7:00 PM (IST) | 12 PM (NYC). Dr. Susan Blaustein, lecturer at Columbia University and the executive director of WomenStrong International, will give a talk entitled “Women, Cities, and Climate Change.” During her lecture, Dr. Susan Blaustein will address the nexus between women, cities, and climate change and evaluate the impact of climate change on women and girls in cities. She will also shed light on the role of different stakeholders ranging from NGOs, central governments, lawmakers, and universities to the private sector in increasing equal access and opportunities for women and girls for a quality of life. 

The lecture will be followed by a Q&A session moderated by Merve İspahani, Academic Programs Coordinator at Columbia Global Centers | Istanbul.

Dr. Susan M. Blaustein is Executive Director of WomenStrong International, a consortium of local non-profits dedicated to empowering women and girls in five impoverished urban settings in India, Kenya, Ghana, Haiti, and Washington, DC, and to sharing best practices worldwide. Prior to establishing WomenStrong, Dr. Blaustein was Co-Founder/Director of the Millennium Cities Initiative (MCI), a 12-year project of the Earth Institute at Columbia University committed to sustainable urban development across sub-Saharan Africa, where the most effective and durable accomplishments were carried out within the poorest communities themselves, often under the initiative and leadership of local women and girls.

Daria Darnell has been a career member of the U.S. Foreign Service since 1994.  She has served in Macedonia, Colombia, Slovakia, South Korea, and Afghanistan, in addition to two tours in the Visa Office in the Department of State.  She arrived in Istanbul to serve as the Consul General in June 2019, having previously served in Adana, Turkey, as Consul from 2009 to 2012.  Her previous assignment was Consul General at the U.S. Consulate General in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, from 2015 to 2018.  Ms. Darnell is originally from West Virginia and a proud graduate of West Virginia University.  In 2013 she obtained a Master of Science from National Defense University’s Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy.
