Co-organized by Columbia Global Centers | Tunis, Columbia Global Centers | Istanbul, MSB- Mediterranean School of Business (South Mediterranean University SMU) and the Center for Sustainable Development, the Youth-led Advocacy Initiative for Global Citizenship, Responsibility, and Cooperation is a workshop/conference around Global Citizenship with a delegation from Columbia University (US), Bogazici University (Turkey), Anadolu University (Turkey), as well as Columbia Global Centers | Istanbul and guests from Tunisian universities, companies, and civil society.

Project Overview:

While the world may be increasingly interconnected, climate change, pandemics, poverty, inequalities, stigma, discrimination, human rights violations, forced migration, and poverty still threaten sustainability.

Education for Global Citizenship, also outlined in SDG 4.7, is defined by UNESCO as an empowering tool for “learners of all ages to assume active roles, both locally and globally, in building more peaceful, tolerant, inclusive and secure societies.” And yet, there are only a few examples of specific educational programs or curricula on global citizenship and sustainable development framework.

This project seeks to bridge this gap with a youth-led, bottom-up approach, starting with selected universities in Tunisia and Türkiye for advocating for a curriculum update to have a multidisciplinary undergraduate course on global citizenship, including topics such as sustainable development, climate change, international migration, one health, health equity, social inclusion, prevention of stigma, racism, and discrimination, in addition to global diplomacy and cooperation.
