On Aug. 19, Columbia Global Centers | Beijing successfully held an opening ceremony for "In Between Spaces — Philippines Art Exhibition." The "In Between Spaces" exhibition maps out artistic visions and investigations from four Filipino artists including Dex Fernandez, Paulo Vinluan, Jay Yao, and MM Yu. Their works explore themes of traditions and modernity; collective and personal memory; and the consciousness found in urban spaces. Joan T. Pichay, Attaché of the Embassy of the Republic of the Philippines to China, and Kevin Li, President of the Columbia Alumni Association of Beijing, attended the event.

"The Philippines is going through changes," said Henry H.C. Woo, curator of the "In Between Spaces" exhibition and a Columbia alumnus of SIPA. "Due to the fast economic growth, the wealthiest 40 families’ assets become double and triple in recent years. Meanwhile, income inequality, investment in education, health and infrastructure, and poverty alleviation are still big issues."

Henry mentioned that there is still a lot of misunderstanding and lack of understanding between citizens in China and the Philippines. He hopes that the exhibition can offer a platform of dialogue to increase mutual understanding between the two people. "I hope this exhibition would be that bridge to build new friendships and new understanding. I want to do this to make a difference."

From Aug. 21st to Sept. 1st, the "In Between Spaces — Philippines Art Exhibition" will be free to public every Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Columbia Global Centers | Beijing. If you have any questions, please leave us a message.
