In January 2018, Tonda Hughes, Henrik H. Bendixen Professor of International Nursing and Director of Global Health Research at Columbia University’s School of Nursing, visited Santiago to collaborate with colleagues from the Universidad Católica de Chile (UC) School of Nursing. Both institutions are recognized as World Health Organization Collaborating Centers in Nursing and Midwifery.
During her visit, Hughes partnered with Lilian Ferrer, UC’s Director of International Affairs, to engage with leading Chilean researchers specializing in sexual and gender minority health. Together, they also met with staff from the Santiago Global Center to establish the foundation for a collaborative research project. This initiative aims to analyze data from Chile's most recent National Health Survey (Encuesta Nacional de Salud, ENS) to better understand the health needs of the country’s sexual and gender minority population, with the ultimate goal of improving health outcomes and reducing disparities.
