Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment Partners with Chilean Firm to Promote Community Engagement in Mining Project

January 16, 2018

The Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment (CCSI), a joint initiative of Columbia Law School and the Earth Institute, has partnered with Dinámica Plataforma, a consulting firm specializing in stakeholder management, to develop a social intervention project in the Huasco Valley of Northern Chile's Atacama region.

This area will host "NuevaUnión," a greenfield copper and gold mining project being developed by Canadian companies Teck and Goldcorp, with an estimated investment of around US$3.5 billion. The collaboration between CCSI and Dinámica Plataforma aims to support the project's efforts to engage with local communities in creating consensus regarding the environmental, social, and economic impacts of the investment. This initiative aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and seeks to foster virtuous, shared-value relationships with the community.

The Columbia team is led by CCSI Director Lisa Sachs and senior economic and policy researcher Nicolas Maennling. The Dinámica Plataforma team is directed by Mauro Valdés and Francisco Klima, both of whom are pictured here.

The project will span six months and will include two field trips by Columbia experts to the Huasco Valley.
