Columbia Medical Center and Chilean Institutions Launch Academic Collaboration with Immunology Symposium in Santiago

July 24, 2018

In early November, the Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) will co-sponsor a major symposium in Santiago titled “Immunodeficiencies and Immune Dysregulation: From Translational Immunology to Personalized Medicine.” The event marks the first initiative under a new academic and research collaboration agreement signed in July between CUIMC and Chile’s Universidad del Desarrollo (UDD), its School of Medicine Clínica Alemana–UDD, and the Institute of Sciences and Innovation in Medicine (ICIM).

The agreement, spearheaded by Dr. Lawrence Stanberry, Associate Dean for International Programs at Columbia’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, includes joint research and educational activities, as well as the potential for student and practitioner exchanges between the institutions.

Co-sponsored by the Columbia Global Centers | Santiago, the symposium will feature leading researchers from Columbia University, including:

  • Dr. Jordan S. Orange, Chair of Pediatrics,

  • Dr. Wendy K. Chung, clinical and molecular geneticist and Kennedy Family Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine,

  • Dr. Lawrence Stanberry, Associate Dean for International Programs.

Additional distinguished participants include:

  • Dr. James R. Lupski (Baylor College of Medicine),

  • Dr. Isabelle Meyts (Belgium),

  • Dr. Joshua Milner (National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases),

  • Experts from Clínica Alemana–UDD and ICIM,

  • Specialists from Chile’s Hospital Luis Calvo Mackenna.

Topics on the agenda include:

  • Precision medicine in primary immunodeficiencies,

  • Gene discovery in immune dysregulation syndromes,

  • Autoimmune diseases and exome sequencing,

  • Advanced diagnostic tools and personalized treatment strategies.

While in Chile, Dr. Stanberry also held meetings with UDD leadership, ICIM researchers, and clinical professionals at Clínica Alemana and Padre Hurtado Hospital—key clinical training sites for UDD’s medical students.
