Columbia Nursing launches its first clinical nursing internship program in China with the Affiliated Hospital of Shandong University of TCM

On March 19, Columbia University School of Nursing delegation visited the Affiliated Hospital of Shandong University of TCM. The two sides signed a strategic cooperative agreement on the clinical nursing internship program, marking the official launch of the School's first internship program in China.

Jennifer Dohrn, Director of the Office of Global Initiatives and PAHO/WHO Collaborating Center for Advanced Practice at Columbia Nursing, Yu-hui  Ferng, Assistant Director of Office of Global Initiatives and PAHO/WHO Collaborating Center for Advanced Practice at Columbia Nursing, Helena Xiao, Assistant Director of the Columbia Global Centers | Beijing, Yitao XUE, Vice President of the Affiliated Hospital of Shandong University of TCM, Wei LI, Vice President of the Affiliated Hospital of Shandong University of TCM, attended the signing ceremony.

On behalf of the Columbia Irving Medical Center and the School of Nursing, Dr. Dohrn first expressed her congratulations on the achievement of the cooperation. She hopes both sides can steadily strengthen communication and understanding, promote international nursing programs, and build a platform for learning and exchange for nurses around the world.

Dr. Dohrn then lectured on transforming nursing education to be relevant for a global community. The talk focused on the role of nursing and midwifery education in moving the agenda forward for equitable care and Universal Health Coverage.

The Columbia delegation also had an on-site observation on traditional Chinese medicine practice and engaged in nursing technique demonstration. They inquired about the details of the upcoming internship program and praised the professional framework designed by the Hospital and their management. The delegation expressed their high expectations towards this program and hopes for the students to gain not only knowledge of their professions, but also of tradition and culture of China.

The Office of Global Initiatives welcomes institutes to join the Global Health Program and bridge between China and the U.S. to promote academic communication and cooperation in nursing, medical treatment, research, and professional training.
