In early September, three representatives from the center-right governing coalition “Chile Vamos” participated in a discussion focused on the identity, ideological stance, and political and economic proposals of the new generation of leaders within the main parties of the alliance. The event was chaired by Isabel Aninat, a researcher at the Centro de Estudios Públicos (CEP) and a Columbia alumna. It was organized by the Santiago Center in collaboration with Chile’s Harvard Alumni Club and the Harvard David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies Regional Office.
In a lively exchange, Felipe Kast (Senator from Evópoli), Jaime Bellolio (Congressman from UDI), and Diego Schalper (Congressman from RN) addressed several key issues, including the differences between the new generation of party leaders and the “old guard.” They discussed the ideological, political, and economic similarities and discrepancies among the three main coalition partners, as well as how they navigate the legacy of Pinochet’s dictatorship and the associated human rights violations. Additionally, they examined the challenges that arise from transitioning from opposition to government.
