Former Chilean Minister of Foreign Affairs and longtime Ambassador, Juan Gabriel Valdés, met with students from Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) to discuss current political and ideological trends in the Americas. In his analysis, Valdés addressed the recent rise of unilateralism, nationalism, and populism in the region.
Following his presentation, the audience engaged in a lively Q&A session, raising questions about U.S.-Latin American relations, the ongoing situation in Venezuela, and the roles of both international and local organizations in the region.
Currently serving as the George W. Ball Adjunct Professor of International and Public Affairs, Valdés will be teaching a course at SIPA from January to May 2019. This event was organized by SIPA’s Latin American Student Association (LASA) in collaboration with the Columbia Global Centers | Santiago.
