Global Center signs agreement with the State of Rio de Janeiro for Tax Data Usage

May 21, 2015

Dr. Thomas J. Trebat, Director of the Columbia Global Centers | Rio de Janeiro, has signed an agreement with Rio de Janeiro's State Finance Secretary, to allow researchers from Columbia University to use the data on tax revenue. The State will provide a Database with all-anonymous information on tax payment in Rio de Janeiro, to be used by researchers who aim to better understand the most varied issues, such as economic development and social inequalities.

Following the terms of the agreement, the researchers who wish to gain access to the database must apply within Columbia, since the University must issue authorizations.

One of the driving factors for the agreement was Dr. Eric Verhoogen and Dr.François Gerard's research on "Industrial policy and firm upgrading in Brazil", which has been awarded an Presidential's Global Innovation Fund in 2014.
