The scientific panel discussion, titled "The Earth Cannot be Silenced: Columbia Climate Research and the Fate of the Planet," was successfully held at Columbia Global Centers | Beijing on July 8, as an event of "Columbia Beijing Summer" Experience Columbia in Beijing series.

Four panelists, including Professor Arthur Lerner-Lam, the Deputy Director of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University; Professor Gisela Winckler, the Research Professor at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory; Professor Xiaojun Yuan, the Research Professor at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory; and Professor Yan Zheng, the Chair Professor at the Southern University of Science and Technology, delivered a general overview of LDEO’s mission and research. The four offered their perspectives on the state of climate research and their work in China. They also discussed China’s role in the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the potential for the One Belt One Road Initiative to support sustainable development.

"We have been at Columbia University since 1949. We are actually at 30 minutes north, the west side of Hudson river, a beautiful rural setting that really promotes scientific interaction," said Professor Lerner. "Our work is to apply the basic knowledge to the problems we face to build a sustainable planet."

The event attracted more than 40 attendees, and more than 60,000 people watched live through iFeng live-streaming.
