Roman seaside villas: between leisure and production

On May 15, Columbia Global Centers | Beijing hosted Professor Annalisa Marzano, Professor of Ancient History in the Department of Classics at the University of Reading, for a public lecture on Roman seaside villas.

Professor Marzano studied Classics and Archaeology at the University of Florence in Italy, where she also received a post-master diploma in Conservation of Cultural Heritage. She was awarded a PhD in Classical Studies from Columbia University.

Professor Marzano's research interests lie in the sphere of Roman social and economic history. During the lecture, she shared her study on the debate on the slave-based villa system and the crisis of Italian villas in the imperial period with more than 30 attendees.

She was later joined by Jinyu LIU, Professor of Classical Studies at DePauw University and Distinguished Guest Professor at Shanghai Normal University, for a further discussion on the maritime villas.
