South China Morning Post reports on “the Role of the State in Economic Growth Roundtable”

On March 18, 2016, Beijing Center co-hosted a high-level roundtable conference on the Role of the State in Economic Growth, with the Center on Global Economic Governance (CGEG), the Columbia University Initiative for Policy Dialogue and Tsinghua University, at which three Nobel Laureates Joseph E. Stiglitz, Edmund S. Phelps, and A. Michael Spence were invited to give keynote address and participate into discussion. Other participants consist of world-renowned scholars and professionals, including Merit Janow, Jeffrey Sachs, Yingyi Qian, Lan Xue, Martin Feldstein, Kenneth Lieberthal, Peter Jungen, David Li, and Lawrence J. Lau, and others.

Joseph Stiglitz, a Nobel Prize-winning economist, said in the interview with South China Morning Post that he would advise the government to do more to boost aggregate demand.

Michael Spence, another Nobel laureate, said China was “well on the way” to shifting to the growth pattern that would underpin its future prosperity.

Jan Svejnar, director of Columbia University’s Centre on Global Economic Governance, said China was moving towards government decentralization. “China is definitely in that direction.”
