University of Jordan and Columbia University to Cooperate on Refugees

The University of Jordan (UJ) President, Prof. Azmi Mahafzah received in his office on Tuesday an academic delegate from Columbia University (CU), New York, to discuss a joint academic project on refugees.

The University of Jordan (UJ) President, Prof. Azmi Mahafzah received in his office on Tuesday an academic delegate from Columbia University (CU), New York, to discuss a joint academic project on refugees.

The project, dubbed “ASPIRE” (Advancing Solutions in Policy, Implementation, Research, and Engagement for Refugees), represents a consortium of multidisciplinary faculty from a number of schools at CU working in direct partnership with Colombia  University Global Center in Amman and faculty from UJ and universities in Turkey to identify the needs of Syrian refugees in Jordan and turkey, and assess services provided to them in a number of areas all through research, training and educational projects.

The project also intends to examine the role of HE institutors in promoting educational advancement and achievement of refugees.

The project will provide a research-training opportunity for faculty and students at UJ. Trainees and students will be engaged in data collection, analysis and interpretation.

Partners from UJ include Dr. Maysa’ Khadra, Dr. Ra’eda Al-Qutob, Dr. Hana Abu Hassan, Dr. Mazen Bishtawi , Dr. Ruba Jaber from the School of Medicine, and Dr. Abeer Dababneh, Director of Center for Women’s Studies, Dr. Lubna Akroush, Department of Social Sciences, and Dr. Rania Jaber, Department of Sociology.
