In collaboration with Weatherhead East Asian Institute, Columbia Global Centers | Beijing co-hosted a public lecture on“Woman and City: A Conversation with Wang Anyi” at Jerome Greene Hall, Columbia University, on March 21. The sold-out event featured acclaimed author Wang Anyi in conversation with Lydia H. Liu, Director of the Institute for Comparative Literature and Society and Wun Tsun Tam Professor in the Humanities, and Eugenia Lean, Director of the Weatherhead East Asian Institute and Associate Professor of Chinese History. Ms. Wang shared her unique perspective and deep understanding about woman development and experience, had a thought-providing conversation and opinion exchanging with professor Liu and Professor Lean.

Shanghai-based novelist Wang Anyi has published twelve novels including The Song of Everlasting Sorrow (Columbia University Press), The Age of Enlightenment, Heavenly Fragrance, and Anonymous. She is the winner of many prestigious literary prizes, including China’s National Short Story Prize, the National Novella Prize, the Mao Dun Prize, the Lu Xun Prize, “The Writer of the Year” of the Chinese Literary Media, the Xiao Hong Prize, the Shi Nai’an Prize, Malaysia’s Huazong International Chinese-language Literary Prize, Taiwan’s “Good Book” Prize of China Times, Korea’s Yi Pyong-ju International Literary Prize, and the Dream of the Red Chamber Prize offered in Hong Kong. Her work was nominated in 2011 for the Man Booker International Prize. Her writings have been translated into English, German, Dutch, French, Spanish, Russian, Serbian, Japanese, Israeli, Korean, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Thai, and Polish. She is a professor at Fudan University.
