At the Columbia Global Center in Santiago, journalism and a strong free press are recognized as fundamental cornerstones of democracy. Ethical, informed journalism plays a vital role in shaping public opinion, holding power accountable, and fostering transparency. In an era where misinformation spreads rapidly, the need for rigorous, trustworthy reporting is more critical than ever.
Columbia University, home to one of the world’s oldest journalism schools, has long been a global leader in the field. Since 2016, the Santiago Center has partnered with the Graduate School of Journalism and local institutions, such as Universidad Diego Portales’ School of Journalism, to spearhead initiatives like public programs, workshops, and fellowships aimed at advancing journalistic excellence.
Under the theme “The Future of Journalism,” the Center has hosted events on corporate finance analysis, combating fake news, and podcast production. In 2024, the Latin American Investigative Journalism Workshop equipped journalists with cutting-edge open-source intelligence (OSINT) techniques to strengthen investigative practices.
By collaborating with Columbia’s Journalism School and regional partners, the Santiago Center affirms its dedication to press freedom and innovation.
