April 05, 2024

Columbia Global Center Tunis recently collaborated with the African Development Group at Columbia University for the 'African Narrative' Speaker Series, an annual event dedicated to exploring and discussing key topics concerning the African continent.

Held at Columbia University in New York, the 2023-2024 series, themed 'African Narratives,' focused on analyzing how Africa is portrayed in mainstream media, as well as the responsibility for shaping these narratives and their broader implications. The series covered diverse facets of African life, spanning Visual Arts, Journalism, Film, Music, Poetry, and Sustainable Development.

One particularly memorable panel, titled 'Sounds of Africa: Music and Poetry Shaping Narratives,' stood out as a beacon of cultural exploration and artistic expression. This session boasted a diverse lineup of speakers, including Ladan Osman, a Somali-American poet and teacher; Teemanay, an Afrobeats singer, songwriter, and producer from Nigeria; and Yacine Boulares, a French-Tunisian saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer based in New York.

"Sounds of Africa" delved into the essence of African music and poetry, showcasing their power to challenge stereotypes, foster cultural pride, and advocate for nuanced storytelling. Yacine Boulares, alongside other artists, poets, and cultural critics, engaged in a captivating dialogue on the role of musicians and poets in reshaping narratives about Africa. With a background in Philosophy, Yacine's journey into the world of music has been as diverse as it is enriching.

Through insightful discussions and captivating performances, the "African Narrative" Speaker Series reaffirmed the importance of diverse voices in shaping a more inclusive and authentic portrait of Africa. Columbia Global Center Tunis remains committed to fostering such dialogues and collaborations that celebrate Africa's rich cultural heritage and promote global understanding.
