Deirdre (“Dede”) Gilmore, one of the five graduate students from the Mailman School of Public Health that have arrived in Chile to perform their global practicums with Universidad Mayor’s Research Center on Society and Health (CISS), will work on a comparative mapping of the national regulatory landscape of cannabis in Latin America.

The name of the project she is working on is Cannabis PoliMap, which she is helping to develop under the direction of CISS professor Alvaro Castillo-Carniglia, who has previously worked analyzing Chilean substance abuse rehabilitation centers.

“I studied Criminal Justice and Sociology as an undergrad and have always been interested in drug policies. Actually, my first introduction to Public Health was an elective course, it was a class that focused on specifically the Portugal drug policy model, decriminalization, and harm reduction,” she said. “After that class, I picked up a Global Health elective course and started looking more into the world of Public Health. This project bridges the gap between my undergraduate studies and my current public health interests.”

Outside of school and research, Gilmore’s hobbies include listening to music and running. “I'm currently curating a rapidly growing playlist made up of only Chilean artists - it is quickly becoming my favorite,” she noted, inviting further recommendations for her listening of local lyrics.
