Join us for an open session organized by the Human Rights Institute at Columbia Law School, the Clooney Foundation for Justice, and the Columbia Global Center in Athens, in collaboration with the Athens Public International Law Center - Athens PIL, Faculty of Law, National & Kapodistrian University of Athens, hosting the inaugural TrialWatch Clinical Network Forum in Athens, Greece.

As part of the TrialWatch Clinical Network Forum (February 8–11, 2026), this open session invites students and members of the academic community to engage with one of the most pressing challenges facing democracies today: the criminalization of journalism and dissent through the misuse of legal systems.

Around the world, courts are increasingly used as tools of repression, targeting journalists, human rights defenders, and political opponents. This session explores how legal advocacy, trial monitoring, and international engagement can push back against these trends.

The discussion will be led by TrialWatch (Columbia Law School) and CFJ TrialWatch, drawing on experiences from multiple regions and real cases monitored globally.
