Message From the Director

Stefanos Gandolfo, Director, Athens Columbia Global Center

As the Director of the Columbia Global Center in Athens, I am inspired daily by the immense potential that collaboration with Greece holds for our University and the local community. Columbia University chose Athens as the site for its tenth global center to provide an unparalleled platform for Columbia faculty and students to immerse themselves in a pivotal global region. Our objective is simple yet ambitious: to connect Columbia students and faculty with their Greek peers, transforming teaching and research into shared benefits for both academic communities.

One of our primary activities is fostering partnerships that have real-world impact. We launched a collaboration with Athens University’s Nursing School to deepen and improve health care practices, particularly in addressing trauma, mental health, and social integration among vulnerable populations such as migrants. This partnership exemplifies the kind of work we hope to expand — bridging academic research with societal needs and ensuring that expertise developed in any one area reaches a wider, global audience.

Greece has a remarkable talent pool, especially in biotech and health sciences — with dozens of Greek faculty in Columbia’s Engineering School alone — but needs a supportive ecosystem to fully develop its potential. We aim to nurture this environment through programs that support university startups and help transform research findings into commercial products. By leveraging Columbia's expertise, our focus is on helping Greece secure its place in the global innovation economy and making its research a driver of economic growth.

The Athens Center connects Columbia faculty and students with Greek peers in ways that enrich academic and social discourse locally and globally. By engaging across fields — from classical studies to cutting-edge research — the Center creates opportunities for fresh insight and shared learning. At its core, it is a bridge linking Greece with Columbia, advancing knowledge and innovation while demonstrating the mutual benefits of collaboration. This work ensures that Athens remains not just a gateway to the past, but a vital partner in shaping the future.
