Environmental Sustainability

At Columbia Global Center Mumbai, our focus on environmental sustainability takes an interdisciplinary approach, blending scientific research with human experience to create impactful solutions. Our work encompasses a range of key areas:

Climate Resilience

Building Climate Resilience

The increasingly visible impact of climate change—ranging from extreme weather events and monsoon variability to prolonged droughts—has heightened the urgency to build climate resilience. India is facing some of the most severe impacts of climate change, especially extreme heat. In 2024, India recorded its second-hottest season since 1970. The WHO estimates that climate change will lead to approximately 2,500,000 additional deaths per year between 2030 and 2050. Columbia Global Center Mumbai is committed to playing a leading role in addressing these challenges. MORE

Water Management

Sustainable Water Management

With 18% of the global population but only 4% of its water resources, India faces critical water stress. Around 600 million people experience high to extreme water shortages, with inadequate access to clean water contributing to 2,00,000 deaths annually. The Center supports projects aimed at addressing water scarcity, groundwater conservation, and equitable access to safe, decontaminated water.  Our upcoming project takes an interdisciplinary approach to water management.

Biodiversity

Conserving Biodiversity

As one of the world’s 17 megadiverse countries, India’s rich ecosystems face immense pressure from rapid urbanization and environmental degradation. The International Union for Conservation of Nature estimates that nearly 1,256 species in India are threatened, including iconic animals such as the Bengal tiger, Indian elephant, and Ganges River dolphin. Alarming trends show a loss of biodiversity, with forest cover shrinking by about 38,000 hectares annually, along with declines in wetlands and marine ecosystems. The Center is actively engaged in initiatives to conserve biodiversity, sharing knowledge drawn from both research and practical fieldwork to protect the country's natural heritage. MORE

Energy, Air Quality, and Waste Solutions

Air pollution poses serious risks to public health and the environment. Ensuring air quality levels adheres to World Health Organization guidelines, could increase life expectancy by 3.6 years for the average Indian. Columbia Global Center Mumbai is focused on programs that address air quality and energy use, to help create cleaner, more sustainable environments. MORE
