“Black” French Studies is a capacious field that merits exploration along multiple lines of inquiry. One of the most compelling questions to arise in this field is the matter of how race and gender have long intersected, shaping the lived experience of “Black” French women, girls, and non-binary people. The inaugural BLACK | FRANCE | NOIRE symposium offers a series of roundtables that address this question from a variety of angles – from intellectual history to contemporary media, from art and performance to activism, from storytelling to sport.
Over two days of dialogue, study, critique, provocation, and celebration, we will consider intellectual, creative, and political possibilities that are both rooted in the past and committed to fashioning more just futures. Thinking in a transoceanic frame, participants will take up specific pistes de réflexion concerning the crucial and longstanding contributions of gendered and racialized individuals and communities within the francophone world.
Les études sur les “Noirs” en France constituent un domaine à la fois vaste et ouvert qui mérite d’être exploré selon plusieurs axes de recherche. L'une des questions les plus captivantes qui émerge de ce champ est celle de l'intersection entre la race et le genre, qui a depuis longtemps façonné l'expérience vécue des femmes, filles et personnes non-binaires “noires” françaises. Le symposium inaugural BLACK | FRANCE | NOIRE propose un ensemble de tables rondes qui abordent cette question sous divers angles, parmi lesquels l’histoire intellectuelle, les médias, les arts, les arts de la scène, l’activisme, la production de récits et le sport.
Deux jours durant, par le biais de discussions et d’échanges, d’étude critique et de célébration, le colloque s’intéressera aux possibilités intellectuelles, artistiques et politiques dont les origines nous renvoient au passé et à l’histoire tout en déterminant le façonnement d’avenirs plus équitables. Dans une approche transocéanique, nous vous invitons à partager vos pistes de réflexions sur des thématiques liées aux contributions à la fois cruciales et de longue date d’ individus et de communautés du monde francophone qui se voient négativement genrées et racialisées.

This roundtable foregrounds gendered histories of chattel slavery and ephemeral, partial, or nominal acts of abolition during the 18th and 19th centuries. This roundtable moves beyond the specificities of the institution of slavery and its afterlives to consider what mediations about freedom and unfreedom across a wide range of francospheres and oceanic frameworks could bring to the study of Blackness. / Cette table ronde met en avant les histoires genrées de l’esclavage chattel ainsi que les actes d’abolition éphémères, partiels ou nominaux des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles. Elle dépasse les spécificités de l’institution de l’esclavage et de ses héritages pour examiner comment les médiations sur la liberté et l’absence de liberté, à travers une vaste gamme de francosphères et de cadres océaniques, peuvent enrichir l’étude de l'expérience « noire ».

This roundtable explores race, identity, and systemic inequalities in France, especially as they touch the lives of Black French women and girls. Participants will discuss historical legacies of racialization, contemporary social struggles, and the future of Black existence in the French socio-political landscape. / Cette table ronde explore la race, l’identité et les inégalités systémiques en France, en particulier dans la vie des femmes et des filles « noires » françaises. This roundtable examines representations of Black French women and girls in literary fiction. Reflecting on the many nodal points of the francophone world, we will discuss both the commonalities and the geocultural or national idiosyncrasies of these representations, while also seeking to identify the shared themes and concerns that shape this diverse corpus. / Cette table ronde examine les représentations de la féminité et de la jeunesse « noires » françaises dans la fiction littéraire. En réfléchissant aux nombreux points nodaux du monde francophone, nous discuterons à la fois des points communs et des idiosyncrasies géoculturelles ou nationales de ces représentations et tenterons de discerner les thèmes et préoccupations partagés qui marquent ce corpus diversifié.

This roundtable delves into the wide variety of representations of Black subjectivities, paying attention to genres, expressions, discourses, shapes, forms, and performances all unfolding in myriad spaces and contexts. Its underlying interrogation is that of limits and possibilities, hopes, dreams, and realities. / Cette table ronde explore la grande variété de représentations des subjectivités « noires », en portant une attention particulière aux genres, expressions, discours, formes et performances qui se déploient dans une multitude d’espaces et de contextes.
