Feeling overwhelmed by the multitude of challenges—balancing family, work, and personal well-being—is a profoundly personal experience. Yet, at the global level, we see a similar convergence of crises: climate change, geopolitical tensions, social instability, economic downturns, and the rapid advancement of technology. These interconnected issues form what is increasingly called a polycrisis — a term introduced by French thinker Edgar Morin and popularized by Columbia historian Professor Adam Tooze. As Professor Tooze notes, a polycrisis is not just multiple crises; it’s when their combination creates something even more dangerous.

Join us on July 6 at Columbia Global Center Beijing for a compelling conversation between Professor Tooze, a leading expert on war, finance, and global order, and Ms. Hejuan Zhao, a pioneering figure in China’s new media industry. Together, they will explore the roots, drivers, and far-reaching implications of today’s polycrisis and discuss how China’s evolving role on the global stage can be reinterpreted through this lens.

This event is co-organized by Columbia Global Center Beijing and the Committee on Global Thought and is part of the Beijing Global Center's “Navigating Globalization: The Path to Advanced Thinking” series.
