What happens when we rethink the modern world through both Chinese and Western intellectual traditions?

On the afternoon of March 26, Adam Tooze, historian at Columbia University, and Wang Hui, Professor at Tsinghua University, will hold an in-person dialogue at Columbia Global Center Beijing, exploring how different intellectual traditions understand global order, modernity, and historical change.

This event is jointly organized by Columbia Global Center Beijing and the Institute for Advanced Study in Humanities and Social Sciences at Tsinghua University. The conversation will revisit how the world has interpreted China’s past and present in different contexts, and will further explore the possibility of developing a more plural and globally grounded understanding of world history.

This dialogue is open to the public. We warmly welcome participants from all sectors of society.

Speakers

Adam Tooze is the Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Professor of History at Columbia University, and also serves as Chair of the Committee on Global Thought and Director of the European Institute.

Wang Hui is one of the first Distinguished Professors of Arts and Humanities at Tsinghua University, and is Director of the Institute for Advanced Study in Humanities and Social Sciences at Tsinghua University. He is also Vice Chair of the Academic Committee at Tsinghua University and a member of the Academia Europaea.
