Hello! My name is Wenrui Nikki Zhang. I'm currently pursuing a Master's in Public Health at the Mailman School of Public Health. This spring, I'm interning at the Columbia Global Center Beijing, where I'm involved in public health projects focusing on community engagement and funding opportunities.

Why did you choose this internship?

I chose to intern at the Beijing Global Center because of its strong commitment to global health and its unique role in facilitating collaboration between global health and academic research. This aligns perfectly with my career aspirations, as I'm passionate about tackling global health challenges through research and funding initiatives.

The center's dedication to fostering cross-cultural understanding and building global networks greatly appeals to me, and I'm eager to contribute by supporting their public health initiatives through funding research and collaboration.

Tell us a little bit about your work. What are some of your responsibilities?

My main responsibilities involve identifying and compiling potential funding sources into a comprehensive database, along with preparing tailored outreach emails for each organization. Through this research, I've gained valuable insights into how funders prioritize projects and allocate resources. As a result, I've been able to assist the Center in better aligning its projects with suitable funding opportunities, thereby making proposals more targeted and impactful.

What key lessons have you learned, and how might they influence your career path?

My time in this internship program has deepened my understanding of the critical role of funding, research, and policy in advancing global health. It has equipped me with practical knowledge of securing research funds—an indispensable element for pushing the boundaries of knowledge and driving innovation. At the heart of every groundbreaking discovery is the vital resource of funding, which serves as the catalyst that unlocks doors to new solutions and transformative change.

A key lesson I've learned is the importance of effective communication and relationship-building in securing funding. I've honed my ability to craft proposals that align with a funder's mission and have gained valuable hands-on experience applying this skill in real-world situations. This solid foundation is reinforcing my passion for global health policy and public health advocacy, fields I'm eager to explore and contribute to further.

Do you have any tips for future virtual interns?

My advice is to stay organized and proactive. Virtual internships require strong self-management, so tracking tasks and deadlines is crucial. Take initiative—seek out new challenges and ask questions when needed. Given the importance of communication in a remote setting, be sure to over-communicate with your team to ensure alignment and clarity.
