2025 Call for Proposals
Research Opportunity: Oncology Research Scholar in Adolescent and Young Adults
Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC), Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/Stem Cell Transplant and the Department of Medicine in collaboration with Hellenic Society of Medical Oncology (HeSMO) are seeking applicants.
The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/Stem Cell Transplant, and the Department of Medicine at CUIMC along with HeSMO invite applicants who are Greek Medical Oncologists, members of the Hellenic Society of Medical Oncology and who either work with adolescent and young adults (AYA) with a solid tumor or seek to develop a clinical research program and/or expertise in AYA with a solid tumor. This grant opportunity will support one Oncology Research Scholar to participate in an academic year clinical research position located at CUIMC (New York, NY). Timing and duration of onsite training at CUIMC will be determined with the selected candidate. The research scholar will shadow adult and pediatric oncologists treating AYA with cancer as well as be provided the opportunity to work with a research mentor and work on ongoing research studies or develop a proposal to answer a new research question. Airfare, room and board, and a monthly stipend will be provided by the grant no less than 50,000 € for the academic year. Applications demonstrating a strong interest in research, those seeking to close a gap in medical care provided by Greek institutions or addressing a compelling and/or understudied research question are encouraged. Selection of the candidate will be made based on academic record, contribution to the scientific community, personal statement, and future plans to enhance the Greek medical system.
Eligibility criteria:
- Applicants must have completed their post-graduate clinical training in oncology within the past seven years.
- Applicants must have established interest in developing or experience with an adolescent/young adult program in oncology.
- Candidates must demonstrate an interest in clinical or translational research and a clear vision for the establishment of AYA medicine in oncology in Greece.
- Active Member of HeSMO
- Completion of the EAKO (Hellenic Academy of Oncology) course will be positively taken into consideration.
- Applicants must be fluent in English.
- Commitment to apply knowledge to Greece is a prerequisite. Candidates that forfeit this obligation will be asked to refund the stipend.

As well, how what clinical and research skills will this opportunity enrich and how do you plan to apply those skills upon returning to Greece (500-word count)
