Kiros Berhane

Prof. Berhane is the Cynthia and Robert Citrone-Roslyn and Leslie Goldstein Professor and Chair of the Department of Biostatistics at Mailman School of Public Health. His broad background is in development of statistical and data science methods for complex data structures in public health research, and their application to examination of multi-factorial effects of risk factors with multiple levels of aggregation. He has served as a PI or Co-I on NIH-funded R01, Program Project, Training (U2R, R25, T32) and Center Grants. He is currently a Principal Investigator (PI) of the project entitled “Advancing Public Health Research in Eastern Africa through Data Science Training (APHREA-DST)” to develop new graduate training programs in public health data science at University of Nairobi (Kenya) and Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia) – as part of NIH’s Data Science Initiative for Africa (DS-I Africa). He is Co-PI of the
Global Environmental and Occupational Health (GEOHealth) Hub for Eastern Africa focusing on health impacts of environmental hazards and climate change - with global partnerships in Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda. Dr. Berhane has been involved in teaching and mentoring students and post-doctoral fellows for 25+ years. Prior to joining Columbia University as Chair of the Department of Biostatistics in 2020, he was Professor and Director of Graduate Programs in Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the University of Southern California (USC) from [1997-2019]. He recently served as a member of the committee of the National Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) on Assessing Causality from a Multidisciplinary Evidence Base for National Ambient Air Quality Standards and also as a member of the core panel for Lancet Commission on the Future of Health and Economic
Resilience of Africa (FHERA). In addition to serving on the editorial boards of several scientific journals, he is also currently serving as a member of Science magazine’s Board of Reviewing Editors. He was a Fulbright Scholar in 2016-2017. He is an elected fellow of the American Statistical Association.
