GSAPP Professor Mario Gooden is deepening his exploration of the intersections of race and space through an installation-performance project titled Black Holes Ain’t So Black.

The Global Leaders in Construction Management (GLCM) team, accompanied by Professor Ibrahim Odeh, recently held a productive meeting at the Columbia Global Center in Athens, bringing together industry leaders, students, and local experts.

 

On Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at the 109th Rectors' Summit organized by Panteion University, Dr. Stefanos Gandolfo, Director of the Athens Columbia Global Center, delivered a presentation on the Center’s activities and its role in fostering academic collaboration and global engagement in Greece.

 

The Joint Workshop on Infrastructure and Energy Sustainability in a Changing Climate, held on June 24–25, 2025, marked a further milestone in the collaboration between Columbia University’s School of Engineering, the Columbia Global Center in Athens, and the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). On July 1, 2025, the Columbia Global Center in Athens, in collaboration with the Columbia Alumni of Greece, organized  a send-off reception to welcome the newest students from Greece joining Columbia University this fall. Held at the Tsakos Energy Navigation headquarters in southern Athens, the event brought together incoming students, alumni, and friends of the University, celebrating the start of their Columbia journey. 

During June, Columbia students enrolled in the Greek Epigraphy course participated in a unique academic experience through the Epigraphy Seminar Study Trip in Athens, led by Paraskevi Martzavou, Professor in the Department of Classics.  Organized in collaboration with the Columbia Global Center in Athens and supported by the Paul and Alexandra Canellopoulos Foundation, the program offered hands-on engagement with ancient inscriptions in their original archaeological settings. Next year’s residency includes a journalist-in-residence, Hanna Liubakova, an exiled journalist and political analyst from Belarus. The 2024 residency period has been extended to accommodate two Palestinian artists, Maha Al-Daya and Doha Kahlout.

The 2025 – 2026 Faculty Visitors at Reid Hall will conduct research at Parisian institutions and contribute to podcasts, videos, and programs at the Columbia Global Paris Center and Institute for Ideas and Imagination.

On June 12, 2025, we hosted a conversation between Pulitzer Prize–winning author Jhumpa Lahiri and the Columbia Global Center Athens Director Stefanos Gandolfo. Drawing on her well-known books—Interpreter of Maladies, In Other Words, and Translating Myself and Others—Lahiri shared personal insights about how language shapes identity, and how writing can be a powerful way to explore and redefine who we are.
