Join Nabil Wakim, expert energy journalist at Le Monde, Paloma Moritz, head of the ecology section at Blast, and Juliana Ruhfus, director of Dart Centre Europe, for a discussion on the emotional and intellectual challenges faced by those on the frontlines of climate reporting. In an era where the climate crisis looms large, how can reporters deliver science-based, impactful stories about our planet's future while considering the toll their work takes on both readers and themselves?

Moderated by Marie Doezema of the Paris Global Center, this event will explore the intersection of climate writing, personal and newsroom practices, and strategies for addressing news-avoidance and eco-anxiety in an increasingly complex field.

Speakers

Nabil Wakim, a professor at the Sciences Po School of Journalism and editor-in-chief at Le Monde, is a political journalist specializing in energy topics for the newspaper's Economy section. In addition to writing articles, he hosts the weekly podcast and newsletter Chaleur Humaine, which focuses on his environmental investigations. This project led to the publication of a book with the same name, released by Éditions du Seuil in October 2023. He is also the author of L'arabe pour tous. Pourquoi ma langue est taboue en France (Seuil, 2020). His dual focus blends political reflection on climate, environmental concerns, and ecological transition with societal questions of language, identity, and cultural transmission.

Paloma Moritz is a journalist and filmmaker. She worked for four years at the independent media outlet Spicee, where she developed an editorial line focused on impact and solutions journalism. Her favorite topics include the reform of democracy, gender equality, and the ecological emergency, causes she has been committed to for many years. In 2018, she co-founded the association Mieux Voter, which advocates for a new voting system called “majority judgment.” She currently leads the ecology section at Blast, where she writes, directs, and presents shows that analyze and report on ecological issues, as well as politics, democratic questions, and gender inequality.

Juliana Ruhfus took over as director of Dart Centre Europe (DCE) in 2022, a relationship that started in 2010 with her attendance of one of Dart’s first UK retreats. Juliana is an award-winning internationally known broadcaster and journalist with a career spanning more than twenty-five years working as reporter, film-maker and executive producer in documentary and current affairs production. She received the Dart Ochberg fellowship in 2012, followed by a scholarship for Harvard’s Global Trauma Programme in 2013, and more than ten years as a trustee on DCE’s European board of Directors. Outside DCE Juliana continues to work as a mentor on investigative journalism projects for organizations that include JournalismFund.eu and Open Democracy. You can find out more about her work here.
