Cities are on the front lines of climate change, grappling with its impacts while driving innovative solutions. According to the UN, 7 out of 10 people now live in urban areas. Yet, a recent report by UN-Habitat, UNDP, and the UNESCO Chair on Urban Resilience reveals that only 27% of national climate plans (NDCs) strongly focus on cities. With countries expected to update these plans by 2025, there’s a critical opportunity to improve: 74% of NDCs could better integrate urban-focused strategies. This highlights the urgent need for nations to fully harness the potential of cities to meet their climate goals.
As the leader of the Urban 20 (U20) in 2024, Rio de Janeiro—alongside São Paulo—plays a pivotal role in representing cities within the G20. This leadership position makes Rio a crucial player in discussions on how cities can drive the success of the Paris Agreement, with climate finance being key to enabling cities to take bold, transformative actions.
